Jorge Ovando x Chicana Foods Sticker

Introducing Jorge Ovando—the artist behind our new sticker design that is inspired by our salsa macha, our culture being the muse.

We first met Jorge and his family at one of our early markets in Garden City. At the time, we didn’t know that he was an artist, but we immediately connected about being Chicanos and stayed in touch.

Jorge Ovando is a U.S. Central American artist based in Boise, ID. As a youngster, he was interested in graffiti and involved with street art crews in Southern California. He was arrested by the cops because of it—and that was that. He quit doing art altogether.

He has always been attracted to Chicano art and art from Mexico—his cultural map. The pandemic sparked a curiosity in him—to see if he could create art and most importantly to not get sucked into the ennui that was social distancing. Because he had time, privilege, and opportunity, he created art.

“Although I have no background in art. I have no training. I have not studied art. My curiosity in art and my potential was stronger than any training or discipline. So I began to paint over and over again, producing art. I never gave up on it…I messed up a lot but I also got better. And after one year of only producing art, I have come to realize that I am a figurative and abstract artist.”

To produce this painting for Chicana Foods, Jorge created a piece inspired by Mexican lithographer, Jose Guadalupe Posada.

“My “calavera” was designed with the seeds in mind that are in Chicana Foods salsa. For example, the sunflower seed inspired the yellow background, giving the “calavera “ a great contrast to its black attire. The yellow calls attention just as the amazing salsa of Chicana Foods.”
